Din l-Art Ħelwa has continued with its restoration works of Mattia Preti’s paintings at the Sarria Church in Floriana. After a period of around three months, the work on the painting depicting St Rocco has been completed.
As part of this project, which started two years on the occasion of the 400th anniversary since the birth of Mattia Preti, Din l-Art Ħelwa had embarked on a restoration programme of the seven Preti paintings which decorate Sarria Church. The first work began on the church’s altarpiece which depicts the Immaculate Conception.
This was followed by the restoration of the painting of St Sebastian and now the painting of St Rocco. The President of Din l-Art Ħelwa, Maria Grazia Cassar, said that the restoration of this painting was carried out by Giuseppe Mantella Restawri with the support of the Cultural Heritage superintendent.
The restoration was sponsored by David Curmi and MSV Life. Maria Grazia Cassar explained that the next painting to be restored will be that of St Rosalia.
The Sarria Church was built in gratitude to Our Lady after the end of the 1675 plague which had wiped out a third of the Maltese population. It had been built at the request of Grandmaster Nicholas Kottoner.
