“I am not easily conned but they were good actors” – others speak of also being conned

A number of people in recent weeks have alleged they were duped by a couple who requested money off them on the excuse they needed to have their vehicle towed.

Following transmission of a video this morning showing the couple trying to entice money out of people, more persons contacted TVM to inform they had been conned by the couple in this manner.

This included a man who requested not to be named and who on Jum il-Ħelsien was driving his motorbike in Triq San Martin toward Għajn Tuffieħa when he was stopped by the couple who asked him for €19 to have their hired Peugeot 208 to be towed. He said he pitied them and gave them €20.

He said they requested his mobile number and promised to ring him so they could pay him back and would also take him to dinner to thank him. Obviously they did not contact him. He added he is not usually taken in by such scams but the couple were excellent actors.

Other persons said the woman was going around Imrieħel begging money and had also entered some retail outlets and other persons said they had been stopped by the couple at Gżira, Swieqi, Ta’ Qali, in Mosta and Qormi.

Further information obtained by TVM resulted the man is Maltese and the woman is Irish and they are often seen in the Birkirkara locality. TVM has passed the information received to the Police.

People who have been duped by the couple are urged to make a Police report.
