More women were elected – do we have gender equality at a political level?

It appears that political parties made a great effort to have more eligible female candidates elected, even among small parties on a European level.

Professor Carmen Sammut said that on a European level, family friendly measures are encouraging more women to become candidates. This, Prof Sammut believes, has shattered the glass ceiling which used to keep women out of the political sphere.

However, she commented that these measures do not appear to be present in the Maltese Parliament as can be seen by the lack of women when compared to the number of men who are MPs.
