The Dwejra Sant’Anna Chapel in Gozo is being embellished with mosaic artistic works through donations received from devotees. The chapel’s Rector, Dun Charles Sultana, said the aim behind the project is the result of devotions particularly from mothers or women who wish to become mothers.
The Sant’Anna chapel was built in 1963 and possibly the first chapel in Gozo built in a modern style. In less than 60 years, the chapel has the third titular painting of St Anne, the last one by artist Dun Roberto Gauci.
Dun Gauci was given the task of carrying out the artistic and embellishment works in the Dwejra chapel, which now has three mosaic scenes. He says that as St Anne and St Joachim were a married couple, the thinking was that he reflects the marriage sacrament with art. He added that the project will be fully completed with the altar and the priest’s seat.
San Lawrenz parishpriest Dun Charles Sultana, who is also the chapel’s rector, stated that there is a great devotion towards this chapel, mostly through grandparents who pray for St Anne’s interception for their children and families, and also in disease cases. There is also a devotion by prospective mothers and women who wish to become mothers.
The chapel’s feast was celebrated on the 26 July.
