Malta Public Transport said that from preliminary investigations about the incident which took place on a bus on Thursday morning, no fire extinguisher had exploded, contrary to various media reports.
In a statement, the MPT said that the seals which are normally taped around the fire extinguisher were missing and as a result, the white powder could escape easily. However, the company added that during the inspections of the fire extinguishers which took place that same morning on the bus concerned, the seals were in place.
The company said that it inspects all the buses daily before they start their service. While apologizing to the passengers who were on the bus at the time of the accident, it assured passers that it tested all its buses regularly as well all the equipment found on the buses.
