Murder victim’s son describes macabre scene moments after explosion

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s son, Matthew, has graphically described what he saw on Monday afternoon following the explosion that killed his mother.

Mr Caruana Galizia was the first to arrive at the crime scene as he had heard the explosion which occurred near their house, a few minutes after his mother left the residence.

“I will never forget, running around the flames in the field; trying to find a way to open the car’s door; the sound of the car’s horn, shouting at two policemen who arrived with a single fire extinguisher to use it”, Caruana Galizia recounted on Facebook.

He said the officers stared at him, while one of them told him: “I’m sorry, but we can do nothing”. He said that at that time he looked around him and saw parts of his mother’s body scattered around him, and realized that really nothing more could be done.

Matthew Caruana Galizia said his mother was killed because, similar to many strong journalists, she affronted whoever wanted to breach the law. He criticized the country’s authorities which, he said, did not take action.
