“My mother hugged me when she saw me – she thought we had been trapped inside the building”

Two days after the collapse of the apartment block in Mellieha, TVM spoke with Lindsey Smith, who was already on a plane at the airport, preparing to fly to England with her four-year-old son, when the building came down.

Standing in front of the demolished block, Lindsey spoke about the moment when Police officers and airport officials boarded the plane and told her what had happened. Emotional and with tears in her eyes, Lindsey also recounts the moment when she was taken to the hospital and hugged her mother.

Lindsey explained that her mother was not aware whether she had managed to go out in the street, adding that her mother kept telling the rescue personnel that her daughter and grandson could be trapped inside the building.

77-year-old Maggie Smith has been living in Malta for 15 years, and for the last six years has resided in the apartment which collapsed. Maggie lived there on her own, after her husband passed away in December. Her daughter Lindsey is a frequent visitor to Malta. This time around she had arrived on the previous Saturday, and was going back on the Saturday when the accident occurred.

tvm.com.mt will shortly be showing the full interview with Lindsey Smith.
