New Zealand declares state of emergency

A state of emergency has been declared in Christchurch, New Zealand, and two other districts in the country following the havoc wrecked by the remnants of the cyclone, Gita.

Tens of schools closed their doors and many roads were closed in South Island as the storm did its worst.

New Zealand’s national airline cancelled all its flights to and from the capital of Wellington.

The residents have been warned of flooding and winds reaching up to 150km/h (90mph).

The Grey District and Buller Districts will also be hit  by the bad storm.
