UPDATED: Five people dead and others still missing after volcano erupts in New Zealand

The number of victims has gone up to five, while several others were injured and some people are still missing after a volcano erupted on a island in New Zealand which is popular with tourists.

The volcano Whakaari, on White Island, began erupting at around 2.10pm in the afternoon. At that time there were a number of tourists inside the crater.

The Police said that 23 people have been rescued, but hours after the eruption the situation was too dangerous for the rescue operation to continue.

The number of victims is expected to increase as some people are still missing.
