Opel Astra driver clocks 696 km/h – according to Police summons

A Belgian driver has been fined after exceeding 696 km per hour in an Opel Astra.

That, at least, is what the Police summons stated.

According to the Police, the man had been driving at half the speed of sound.

The man had been driving in Quiévrain, a small Belgian village where the maximum allowable speed is 50 km per hour.

No Formula 1 car can attain the speed indicated on the ticket. The figure was obviously e technical error by the Police.

In truth, the man had been proceeding at 60 km per hour. Unfortunately, he was still fined, as he had exceeded the authorised limit by 10 km.
