A big cocaine seizure at the Freeport which was found hidden in containers on their transit to two countries in Europe.
Over 144kg of cocaine were found by Maltese Customs officers during searches in three containers. The market drug value is estimated to reach almost €16 million. The three containers had been dispatched from South American countries.
Two of the containers were destined for Durres in Albania. Customs officers discovered in them cocaine packets, amounting to 48kg. In the third container, which was due for Bar port in Montenegro, a total of 96kg of cocaine were also seized.
The Customs operation started on Saturday morning and took twelve hours. A magisterial inquiry has been appointed on the case, while Police investigations are ongoing.
With the latest drug find, the total drug seizures by Customs has risen to over 750kg this year, with a market value amounting to €84 million.
