Following Saturday’s hail storm that hit the Maltese islands in the afternoon, another rare phenomenon occurred in the past hours. What appeared as a hurricane, gail force wind is affecting the islands and was even calculated at Force 10 and 11, causing various damages.
The worst affected by the strong wind were trees, many of them uprooted and blocking various roads. Photographs uploaded on the social media also featured many damaged cars by objects thrown into the air by the wind, including photo voltaic panels.
The storm also affected Carnival enthusiasts who worked hard to protect their floats sheltering under a tent specifically mounted which however was damaged by the gale force wind.
It was also a night of continuous work for members of the police and the Civil Protection due to the danger created in various roads.
It is calculated that this is a record for Malta with gale force wind hitting the islands as weather forecasters said that a type of hurricane, nicknamed ‘medigan’ formed in central Mediterranean.
The airport’s meteorological office said that the gale force wind is expected to prevail until mid-day, will slow in the afternoon, while rainfall is expected to continue during the whole day.
