Prime Minister Robert Abela is in Athens and this afternoon is participating in the EU Med 9 Summit together with a number of other Mediterranean countries.
Topics expected to dominate the discussion are the immigration crisis, the situation in Afghanistan, security in the Mediterranean, and climate change.
Together with Prime Minister Robert Abela, other participants in this summit include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Penkovic, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, Slovak Prime Minister Janez Jansa, and Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva.
The leaders were expected to arrive for the Summit at about 3.00 p.m. and will be taking part in a debate and two plenaries, with the summit being concluded this evening after a media conference.
The EU Med group was set up in 2013, on the initiative of Cyprus and Spain, for discussion on relations between countries bordering the Mediterranean. The same Summit was held in Malta in June of 2019.
