PN MPs agree on Therese Comodini Cachia to replace Delia as Leader of the Opposition

Sources said that Lawyer Therese Comodini Cachia was chosen by the majority within the parliamentary group of the Nationalist Party to replace the current Opposition Leader Dr Adrian Delia, who on Tuesday lost a vote of confidence.

Shortly before four o’clock in the afternoon, Deputies Chris Said and Claudette Buttigieg went to meet the President, George Vella, and shortly after this meeting ended at St. Anton’s Palace, Dr. Adrian Delia appeared and emerged about an hour later.

It was around a quarter past four in the afternoon when Nationalist MPs Chris Said and Claudette Buttigieg were seen entering St Anton’s Palace at the end of a meeting of MPs held in Parliament on Tuesday who voted that they no longer trusted Dr Adrian Delia as Leader of the Nationalist Party and Leader of the Opposition.

The two Nationalist MPs were seen leaving the Palace just over three-quarters of an hour later without giving any comments to reporters.

It is not being excluded that during the meeting with the President, the two MPs asked the President to formally start the process to appoint a new Leader of the Opposition to replace Dr Delia because there was a majority in the Opposition supporting Dr Comodini Cachia to assume this constitutional post.

At about five-thirty in the afternoon, Dr. Adrian Delia was also seen entering the Palace and left about an hour later, without giving any comments to journalists.

Dr Delia had previously said that despite the no-confidence vote, he would remain both the Leader of the Nationalist Party and Leader of the Opposition. He also said that he would convene the party’s Executive to discuss the situation further. Executive Chairman Dr Alex Perici Calascione said he had received the request for the meeting and was coordinating it to take place in the coming days.

According to the Nationalist statute, the Leader of the Nationalist Party should serve as Opposition Leader when the party is in Opposition. However, according to the Constitution of Malta, the President has the power to appoint as Leader of the Opposition the person who commands the greatest support among members of the Opposition.

Former MEP Therese Comodini Cachia who seconded the no-confidence motion in Dr Delia, was elected to the National Parliament in 2017 and if she is appointed Leader of the Opposition, she will be the first woman to ever serve in this kariga.
