The Leader of the Nationalist Party Adrian Delia has invoked a clause in the PN’s statute and called for an Extraordinary General Council to meet on Saturday 27 July.
In comments he gave following the meeting of the PN’s Executive Committee which lasted six hours and ended at around 12.15am, Dr Delia said that he took this decision himself in the interest of the party so that the PN can move forward with its work.
He said that the General Council had been requested to meet after a number of councillors signed a petition. However the Council will be called at the leader’s own request after it was verified that a number of signatures on the petition were not valid.
It was stated that the Executive Committee has appointed a Commission to organise, lead and supervise the voting of the General Council. The Commission will be led by Francis Zammit Dimech.
Dr Delia confirmed that a vote of confidence will be held during the General Council. Asked whether he will shoulder political responsibility, Dr Delia said that he will abide by the decision taken at the General Council.
Dr Delia said that now that the party will go for a General Council, they will work tirelessly over the next few weeks so that the General Council will be a strong one, with an open discussion and that, according to the results of the Council, he will take the decisions which are in the best interests of the PN and not of Adrian Delia
Asked by TVM why he shouldered the responsibility to call for a General Council, Dr CDelia said that in the process to choose the leader, the PN had wanted the card-carrying members (tesserati) to make the decision, so the decision to retain or remove him should also be left in the hands of the members.
Dr Delia said he felt that the best procedure was to go for a General Council, which is the highest organ of the party, without it being contaminated and without removing the power of the tesserati to appoint the leaders.
During the meeting of the Executive Committee, Dr Delia also proposed that Dr Louis Galea should be in charge of the process which will lead to a reform of the PN’s policies.
Meanwhile, Alex Perici Calascione was appointed President of the PN’s Executive after Graziella Attard Previ withdrew her candidature. Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici was appointed Administrative President. This post was also contested by Graham Bencini. Charles Selvaggi withdrew his nomination for Treasurer of the PN, so the Electoral Commission will once again be opening nominations for this post.
