Pope celebrates Mass in the Italian city of Camerino for earthquake sufferers

Pope Francis celebrated Mass in the city of Camerino in central Italy which was devastated by an earthquake in 2016. The Pope spoke to residents who, till today, still suffer the consequences of the earthquake, saying that he was close to them and that he was praying for their situation to improve.

In the face of what you have seen and suffered, confronted with collapsed houses and buildings reduced to rubble, comes this question: what is man? What is he, if what you build can collapse in an instant? What is he if his hope can end in dust? What is man ever? The answer seems to come from the continuation of the sentence: what is man because you remember him? God remembers us, as we are, with our frailties.”

Pope Francis also prayed over the statue of the Virgin Mary which suffered structural damage as a result of the earthquake.

Camerino was hit by an earthquake on 24 August and 20 October 2016, with 300 people having to abandon their homes.
