The powerboat which was driven off on Thursday after a large quantity of cigarettes were unloaded from it at St Paul’s Bay was found yesterday (Friday) evening at sea in the limits of Xemxija.
The boat was found abandoned and tied up to a buoy in the middle of Xemxija Bay. It apparently still carried a number of boxes of contraband cigarettes, as not all the cigarettes had been offloaded from it onto a van on Thursday.
The boat was escorted by an Armed Forces patrol boat to Ras Hanzir, where Customs officers unloaded the boxes of cigarettes and counted up the contents.
The search operation is conducted by Superintendent Walter Spiteri and Inspector Maurice Curmi from Qawra District, together with Customs authorities and the AFM.
