Professor Gauci explains reasons for beds at Malta University

Following the news two days ago when it was announced that a number of halls at Malta University have been converted to hospital wards , many have asked why this has happened when the number of Covid-19 cases seems to be stabilising.

Public Health Superintendent, Professor Charmaine Gauci, explained that at the outbreak of the pandemic the Authorities wanted to be prepared have maximum facilities available for possible patients and in the case of increase in infections, the bed space would be available.

She said that even if the situation appears to be under control, one cannot afford to relax but has to remain prepared for all eventualities.

She pointed out that come October there will again be case of influenza and therefore more hospital bed will be required because the country may have ‘flu and Covid-19 patients together and therefore more beds would be needed.
