A group of people gathered this evening in front Castille protesting that Malta leave the European Union.
The group, who go by the name Mexit, listed illegal immigration as one of the main reasons why Malta should leave the European Union. The group is calling for a referendum aimed at getting Maltese people to vote whether or not to remain in the European Union.
The chief spokesman of the activity, Father David Muscat, described immigration as an invasion and a distraction. He said that it was not only migrants that come here on boats that posed a problem, but also foreigners who are legally among us, who are creating a burden on the country’s infrastructure.
On the subject of immigrants who cross over by sea, Fr David said that the country should heed the advice of former Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, to close the ports and send them back where they came from. He insisted that they should not be allowed to drown but neither could they be allowed into Europe.
He said that Malta had become a paradise for those who do not want to pay taxes, and wealth was being enjoyed by those who were on society’s top tier.
