Man accused of sexually abusing granddaughter aged nine

A 42-year-old man from Żurrieq is being accused of having sexually abused a granddaughter aged nine years old.

The man, whose name cannot be published by Court Order, has denied that on three occasions he carried out sexual acts on a minor whom it was his duty to protect.

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo, heard his Defence Counsel’s plea for bail after the girl’s grandmother, who is the wife of the accused, testified she had never witnessed being afraid of him over the last two years.

However, the Prosecution maintained the girl had repeated her version three times after speaking to Appoġġ and with a psychologist. She was always consistent in her versions. The Prosecution stressed that if bail was granted before the girl had testified there was a dangerous of interference of proof.

Court rejected the plea for bail when it considered the Prosecution had declared that all witnesses will testify in the following session hearing.
