The baby that was found abandoned on the doorstep of a block of apartments in Buġibba has been given the name Cristiano.
It was at about 4pm that the baby was found abandoned and asleep and still carrying an umbilical cord. Police were on the spot and conveyed the newly-born babe to hospital. Initial reports reaching TVM state the baby is a boy, is Caucasian and do not exclude he is of foreign parentage. It appears when he was found he did not cry and when a Police official gathered him up, he immediately grasped and pressed his finger.
In a preliminary medical examination the baby was found to be in a good condition and weighed 3.5 kilos. When found the baby was wrapped in clothing and was taken to Mater Dei in an ambulance escorted by Police.
Duty Magistrate Dr Joe Mifsud ordered an Inquiry. TVM is informed it was Dr Mifsud who gave the baby the name Cristiano. As part of the investigation Dr Marisa Cassar will carry out DNA tests while investigations are undergoing about pending pregnancies although TVM is informed this will not necessarily lead to the parents being identified.
The Emergency Department established Cristiano was born at about 12 noon. As the spot where he was found there were no signs of blood, this is an indication he was born somewhere else and then placed there. Health Centres and private clinics have been alerted in case the mother requests medical assistance there.
