Remanded in custody after being arraigned and charged with St Paul’s Bay stabbing

Abd Al Salam el Adaw Mahmud, a 44-year-old Palestinian national, has been charged in Court with stabbing Wagih Yousseff Awad in a shop in St Paul’s Bay.

Inspector Godwin Scerri for the Prosecution stated that Mahmud has been residing in Malta for 15 years, and had already committed a similar crime in the past. Inspector Scerri added that the shop owner is still recovering in hospital from his injuries, and although he is not on the danger list, the incident could have resulted in much more serious consequences.

The Prosecution further stated it had seen what had happened on the shop’s CCTV footage, adding that the incident occurred when the accused approached the shop owner, spoke to him in an aggressive tone and stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech denied a request for bail as accused had been found guilty of similar crimes in the past and ordered that he be remanded in custody at Corradino Correctional Facility.
