Reports say that Chinese energy negotiator is linked to Macbridge company

An international investigation revealed that the Macbridge company is allegedly owned by Tang Zhaomin, the mother-in-law of Chinese Chen Cheng. Reports say that Cheng was the person who negotiated the agreement between Shanghai Electric Power and Enemalta, to buy a third of Enemalta’s shares in 2014 and later represented Shanghai Electric Power in the negotiations for the wind farm in Montenegro..

The Times of Malta, Reuters and other foreign media said they investigated for the past year who owned this company which was mentioned in the Panama Papers in 2015.

Macbridge allegedly had to transfer money in accounts opened by Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi in Panama.

Reacting to the reports on the social media, independent MP and former Minister Konrad Mizzi stated that he has no information on Macbridge and denied that he ever had any form of plan with this company. He added that he knew Chen Cheng in his official role as consultant of Shanghai Electric Power on a number of initiatives.

In a statement, the Daphne Caruana Galizia foundation said that new charges should be issued against Yorgen Fenech, Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi. It stated that Chen Cheng should be extradited to Malta to face justice and that action should be taken against the company that employs Cheng – Accenture. The foundation requested authorities to investigate the role that former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had in the agreement with Shanghai Electric Power and the Montenegro project.
