Request by Degiorgio brothers and Vince Muscat for Presidential pardon has been denied

The Cabinet has decided to to advise the President of the Republic to turn down the request for a pardon by brothers Alfred and George Degiorgio and Vincent Muscat. In a Government statement, it was explained that this decision was taken in line with the advice of the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police.

It said that the Cabinet’s decision is not only based on the advice of the relevant institutions, but also in the national interest and in the interest of justice.

Prior to the Cabinet meeting, Minister Carmelo Abela decided to recuse himself and stated that he was doing this in the light of the unfounded allegations being made against him by Jason Azzopardi and the subsequent libel case which he has filed against him. Minister Abela explained that he took this decision despite the fact that there are no statuary reasons or other reasons to do so, however he wished to avoid casting any suspicions of impartiality or doubt in the workings of the Cabinet.
