A sizeable chapel dedicated to Santu Kristu on the outskirts of Ghaxaq is to undergo restoration in another project by the Restoration Directorate within the Culture Ministry.
The chapel was built over 160 years ago on a site where there had previously been a niche dedicated to Santu Kristu. Restoration will be mainly carried out on the outside, where dirt and a black coating have accumulated in certain parts, and where the stone surfacing is crumbling in other parts. Decorative work carved into the stone, and which has been lost or corroded over time, will be replaced through the use of purpose-built models.
Minister Owen Bonnici stated that the work will be carried out as part of a scheme through which Local Councils propose restoration projects in their localities. The Minister added that this is part of a Government commitment towards culture in the localities.
