The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has been elected Chair of an investigative committee tasked with investigating allegations concerning the management of the European Union’s external borders and the role of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
A statement published on the European People’s Party (EPP) website stated that her appointment was supported by every major political group in the European Parliament. Dr Metsola must report back to the European Parliament within four months.
Dr Metsola said the committee will focus on different aspects, including compliance and respect for fundamental rights; the internal administration of the Agency, and the importance of meeting transparency and accountability standards.
She added that there will also be an analysis on whether Frontex’s work is in line with the European Union’s values and goals on this subject.
