Roma and The Favourite with most Oscar nominations

The nominations for this year’s Oscars have been announced. The largest number of nominations went to “Roma” and “The Favourite”, with ten nominations each, followed by “A Star is Born” and “Vice” which were nominated in eight categories each.

The emotional drama “Roma”, which is the first production distributed on Netflix to be nominated for the Oscars, received ten nominations including for Best Film and Best Director, Alfonso Cuaron. He directed the nostalgic cinema production which is set in the 197os and is based on his childhood in Mexico.

The same number of nominations went to “The Favourite” which is a comedy about women who are trying to obtain power in the 18th century when Queen Anne was the head of the British empire.

Competing for Best Film are “Black Panther,” “Green Book,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Vice” and the film based on the personal life of the lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury: “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

For the 91st edition of the Academy Awards, a large number of nominations were also received for the film”A Star is Born” the  debut for Bradley Cooper as a director and for Lady Gaga as an actress. The film, which is based on the classic 1937  film has received nominations for its two leading actors in their respective categories, as well as for Best Song for ”Shallow” despite the disappointment for Cooper who was not nominated for Best Director.

“Vice” based on the story of former Vice President to President George W Bush, with an unrecognisable Christian Bale in the role of Dick Cheney who goes through an iconic transformation, also received eight nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Bale. Amy Adams who played the part of his wife, Lynne Cheney was also nominated for Best Actress.

“Black Panther” also stood out among the list of nominees, with 8 nominations and the first film based on superheroes to ever receive a Best Film nomination.

The Academy Awards, which are the most prestigious in the cinema industry, will be held on 24 February.
