The 13 employees of two companies had a lucky escape when a substantial part of a warehouse in which they were working at Mrieħel collapsed early this afternoon with other employees working elsewhere in the vicinity telling TVM the sounds of the collapse were so strong they thought it was an earthquake.
A substantial part of the roof and walls of the warehouse used by two leading establishments collapsed at about 1.45pm in Triq l-Imprendituri in Mrieħel.
Still suffering from severe shock, workers in the area said the sounds were so severe they thought it was an earthquake and that it is a miracle that no deaths or injuries occurred.
From information obtained, before the collapse the 13 employees in the warehouse at the time heard rumbling sounds quickly left the building and seconds later they saw a large chunk of the roof and walls collapse over the merchandise in the warehouse.
Police quickly rushed to the spot and Civil Protection officials immediately checked out whether any persons were reported missing and whether anybody was trapped under the debris. The employees outside however informed them nobody was missing and further searches were terminated while an ambulance returned to Mater Dei Hospital.
Following the incident employees and clients of nearby establishments were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Currently, adjacent to the warehouse, construction works are being carried out.
