Suspended sentence for young man who was caught ringing football players to bribe them
A young man aged 21 was accused of having manipulated football matches involving the Attard FC team, of not passing information of manipulations to the Commissioner for Police and of betting on football matches without a licence. Rudgear Scerri, who lives in Qormi, admitted the charges in Court.
Police said they had arrested Scerri after receiving information from third persons. It was explained that during a raid on Scerri’s home he was in fact caught telephoning football players and offering them bribes. The Police stated that on searching Scerri’s home cash numbering several thousand was found.
Magistrate Charmaine Galea condemned Scerri to a two year prison sentence suspended for a period of four years and fined him €50,000.
