In the UK, a new study is proposing that even dead men can be sperm donors because sperm donation has gone down drastically.
The Journal of Medical Ethics says that this proposal is ethical enough if it is done with consent so that sperm banks can increase their reserves.
According to this study, the laws linked to sperm donation are very strict and are not helping to increase or encourage new donors.
Science says that sperm can be collected after death thanks to electronic stimulation to the prostate gland or through an operation. The sperm is then kept frozen.
The evidence from this study shows that sperm taken from dead donors can lead to healthy babies as long as the sperm is collected within 48 hours of the donor’s death.
In the UK, 2,345 healthy babies were born from sperm donation in 2017.
