Spanish cabinet to approve measures to rule Catalonia

The Spanish cabinet is expected to approve measures which will permit the Government to take over the direct rule of the Catalonia region.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will preside over a cabinet meeting, three weeks after the region’s referendum for independence.

The Spanish Government had insisted that voting in the referendum was illegal, however the Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont said he had a mandate to declare independence.

This prompted the central Government in Madrid to initiate proceedings to suspend the region’s autonomy by triggering Article 155 of the Constitution.
