Strengthening of sustainable connectivity between Europe and Asia to be discussed
“Europe and Asia: A Global Partnership for Global Challenges” is the theme of the 12th summit between leaders of 51 Asian and European countries, known as ASEM, which is meeting in the Belgian capital of Brussels.
During today’s summit, the leaders from the two regions will be discussing the important role which ASEM may have in support of order based on rules and the value of multilateral co-operation. Connectivity will also be discussed, with an emphasis on strengthening sustainable connectivity between Europe and Asia under the three pillars set up by ASEM: political issues, economic and financial issues and social and cultural issues. This is all a way for countries, peoples and societies to get along and be drawn closer to each other.
Today’s plenary session will be addressed later on by PM Joseph Muscat, who will be speaking about how Malta has made great advances in the field of technology and innovation. Dr Muscat will also be explaining what Malta has done and how it is succeeding in the blockchain sector which is drawing a lot of attention. Our country is now also looking towards the field of Artificial Intelligence so that we can attract more investment from this continent as well.
The countries which form ASEM represent 65% of the global Gross Domestic Product, 55% of global trade, 60% of the world population and 75% of global tourism. For more than 20 years, ASEM was the most comprehensive partnership between Asia and Europe which joins the two continents together.
