Test for Merkel as German MPs vote on Greek bailout

Today, German MPs will be debating and voting on the third financial package for Greece.

The majority are expected to approve the bailout however Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing opposition from her Centre-Right alliance.

The Christian Democrats (CDU) and the CSU from Bavaria are split on the €86 billion bailout package for Greece.

Those who are against it can amount up to 100 MPs from a total of 631. Last month, 65 MPs did not wish to support the beginning of the negations for the third bailout package.

Some MPs are suspecting that the agreement can lead to the waiver of part of the Greek debt which would mean that it would have to be paid by EU citizens.

The Christian Democrats’ Secretary General Peter Tauber warned that those who vote no would be basically backstabbing the Chancellor.
