Young woman awarded €70,000 damages after suffering disability during horse-racing event

The Court has awarded a young 18-year-old woman €70,000 in compensation for physical damages she suffered six years ago during horse-racing activities at Ħal Far. Shania Micallef was watching a race when she was struck by a pony and suffered serious injuries.

Her parents sued races organiser Pierre Cuschieri following their daughter’s inability to attend school and her having suffered psychological trauma.

Judge Lawrence Mintoff said that from witness accounts the level of safety organisation did not conform to basic security requirements. He held Cuschieri responsible for the incident that caused Shania Micallef’s 24% disability.
