UPDATED: Cab driver of private company and another person arrested in connection with Suq tal-Belt robbery

The Police are investigating the theft of a substantial amount of cash money from a food establishment which forms part of the Suq tal-Belt (Valletta Market).

A man had entered inside from a part of the establishment from outside the market side, at around 2.00 in the afternoon, grabbed a bag containing money and ran away. The man entered into a cab of a private company which drove off towards the cruise passenger terminal, while it was followed by the establishment employees. Members of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit immediately started searches in various places near the capital and observed vehicles, with the aim of intercepting the car indicated by the establishment workers.

After an hour of the reported theft, the Police noticed a vehicle parked at Sliema front and managed to arrest its driver and another person in the car. TVM is informed that the driver is well known by Police and was arraigned in Court charged with thefts from apartments and vehicles. The driver alleged that he had just made a trip with a man from Valletta to Sliema and that the passenger descended at Imsida.


The young driver and the vehicle he used were taken to the Police headquarters for more investigation, which is led by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Valletta District. It is not yet known the amount of money stolen, however it is reported that the sum is a considerable one.
