He just can’t get by without a camera. For Jean Paul Borg, his photo camera is his pride and joy. Jean Paul is passionate about photographs. Although it is not his livelihood, at every available opportunity he goes around Maltese and Gozitan towns and villages and snaps away at anything characteristic of the land of his birth – purely to retain memories.
Jean Paul Borg, who is 41-years old, travels all over the Maltese Islands to take in their beauty and add to his collection of photos of everything Maltese.
“Although Malta is a very small country, if you really love all that is linked to it, it’s incredible what one can find around every corner.”
Niches, traditional Maltese food, Maltese churches and chapels, festas, buildings and architecture… everyday life, simple, Maltese… all this is much sought after by Jean Paul.
“I recall a woman in Gudja… we normally describe a shepherd as a man… this one happened to be a woman… she was walking along with two sheep and a dog… I had spotted her in Gudja near the Loretu Chapel close to the airport and just snapped a photograph. I treasure it!”
Jean Paul has never been abroad. He says he has everything he needs on the islands.
“They call me a patriot… I love it… They ask me whether I have ever travelled abroad. When I tell them I haven’t, they ask why, and I reply that I have so much more to see in Malta. Perhaps in another life…”
Jean Paul told Television Malta that he carries his camera everywhere. He is lost without it. It is always at hand to record some characteristic of the Maltese Islands. He snaps away and it remains a memento. He reckons his collection already includes thousands of photographs.
“As you can see, I always carry a shoulder bag. Which means my camera is always handy. I have photographs taken a year ago and more. I still haven’t had the chance to go through them.”
