Thousands of people evacuated following eruption of La Soufrière volcano

The UN has warned that the eruption of a volcano on the island of St Vincente in the Caribbean will lead to a humanitarian crisis which will drag on for months.

A spokesperson for the UN, Didier Trebucq, said that with other islands will also be affected such as Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda.

The organisation has therefore appealed for financial aid as around 20,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes due to the eruption of La Soufrière volcano which had not been active since 1979.
