Three police officers had to be given medical treatment after they bravely entered a burning house to rescue a woman trapped inside.
It was around 5pm when assistance was requested at Triq il-Muża, Siggiewi, after residents noticed smoke coming out of the house. The first to arrive were Police from the Rapid Intervention Unit as well as from the local police station.
At first they knocked on the outside door but no one opened. They tried to open the door but it was locked so their only access was through the roof. The three officers, Sgt Reuben Balzan and Police Constable Nicolai Dalli from the RIU at Sgt James Weatherill from the Zebbug police station, went up on the roof of the next door neighbour and jumped on to the adjoining roof of the house which was on fire. After breaking the window they entered and found the woman in a room which was enveloped by smoke.
Three fire engines arrived on the scene and the firefighters together with the police officers managed to control the flames.
The three Police officers managed to take the woman outside while an ambulance arrived on the scene and a medical team began treating her. Emergency Medic Dr Jonathan Joslin also arrived on the scene and, together with the nurses, treated the three officers for smoke inhalation.
