Turkish troops open offensive in north east Syria against Kurd forces

Turkish troops have embarked on a military offence in the north east of Syria against Kurd forces allied to the US in the fight against the Islamic State, ISIS.

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said the operation is intended to create a security zone free of Kurd forces that are offering refuge to Syrian refugees.

Turkish aircraft are attacking zones occupied by civilians.

A few days ago US President Donald Trump withdrew US forces from the north of Syria, a move that was criticised by the Kurds and opened the way for a Turkish offensive. Trump has warned Turkey of the consequences of their staging any attacks on Kurdi forces.
