Twin brothers in court admit to charges of theft

Gordon and Stephen Cassar, 35 year old twins from Qormi, were held in preventive custody after they were charged in court with a spate of thefts.

They were accused of stealing handbags from three women, two of whom are over eighty. The prosecution led by Inspector Fabian Fleri, Lydon Zammit, and Christina Delia, said the thefts occurred between October and December.

Stephen is a ship loader, while his brother Gordon is a student.

The prosecution exhibited CCTV footage where Stephen is seen emerging from a car – registered in the name of the accused’s father – running, snatching a bag and running back into the car holding a bag in his hand.

One of the women ran after them briefly, noted the grey vehicle type Toyota Vitz, and part of the number on the registration plate.

The men were found and arrested. The bag was also found in Santa Venera, without money inside.

The defense said the men had a drug problem. In fact they pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

The defense did not ask for bail.
