Two men, a 44-year old Italian and a 49-year old Maltese, were arrested on Friday evening after being found in possession of 5kg of cocaine. The Police estimates that the seized drugs have a street value of €250,000.
The Police said that the arrests were made in St Paul’s Bay following weeks of observation on drug trafficking suspicion.
The men were arraigned under custody this morning before Magistrate Ian Farrugia. Walter Baldacchino from Valletta was accused with drug possession in circumstances which weren’t for his exclusive use, while Claudio Castano’, with an unknown address, was accused with drug importation and trafficking, and with money laundering.
Baldacchino was found carrying three kilogram of suspected cocaine substance, while another two kilogram of cocaine were found hidden in the Italian man’s vehicle, together with a big amount of cash.
Prosecuting Inspector Alfredo Mangion said that Castanò was caught exiting a garage in St Paul’s Bay and officers seized two blocks of suspected cocaine from his car, similar to those found in an apartment in the same area.
Magistrate Ian Farrugia denied a request for Baldacchino’s release from custody, while Castanò did not request his release from custody.
