Two men detain thief from stealing handbag from a Belgian youth at Sliema
A thief who assaulted a female youth to steal her handbag was stopped by two men who detained him until he was arrested by the Police. The attempted theft occurred today at around 4.15 in the morning in St Vincent Street, Sliema.
The Police said in a statement that the suspect, a 33-year old Sliema man, grabbed the handbag of the 18-year old Belgian youth as she was walking with a friend, also a Belgian citizen. The man later pushed her to the ground.
At this moment, a 33-year old from Pembroke and a 25-year old Gira man, immediately grabbed the suspect until the District police and those from the Rapid Intervention Unit arrived.
The alleged thief was taken to the Sliema station for more investigation, while the victim was admitted for treatment at the Gzira Health Centre, where she was found to be suffering from slight injuries.
The Police praised the action taken by the men, but reminded the public to be on alert in such instances as the suspected can be dangerous and armed.
