UPDATED: Youth arrested after attacking Police with sand during bay inspection
A 19-year-old youth, a resident of Ħaż-Żabbar, was arrested after assaulting Police officers during inspections in connection with breaching of Covid-19 regulations.
Police officers from the Environment Protection Unit were carrying out inspections at about 6.30 p.m. yesterday in the area of Għajn Tuffieħa Bay when they noted a group of six persons together on the bay. The officers pointed out they could not be together in groups of more than two persons.
Two officers spoke with the persons involved, who cooperated with the Police, whilst a 19-year-old youth started refusing to give his details and did not obey Police orders not to remain with the group, as well as to abide by social distancing orders imposed because of the pandemic.
At one point the youth grabbed a sand-filled towel and flicked it in the direction of the officers. One of the officers was hit in the face and ended up with sand in his eyes. After going to Health Centre for treatment, the officer was referred to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical attention and was later certified to have sustained slight injuries.
The youth was taken to Qawra Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
