Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt together with Universal Studios have released a “behind the scenes” film of the actual film “By the Sea” that was completely filmed in Gozo at this time last year, giving Malta’s sister island ample coverage. This was the first time the two acted together after their film “Mr and Mrs Smith” which was released ten years ago.
The film shows Imġarr ix-Xini as probably never seen before and will probably not be seen again except in the film. The “behind the scenes” film runs for two minutes. “By the Sea” producers transformed the area to look like a picturesque French location during the 70s. The film will start being shown in US cinemas on 13th November following the World Premiere at Hollywood’s famous Chinese Theatre on 5th November.
The scenes featured in Vogue magazine show the film set that was constructed during the three months of filming in Gozo the highlight of which is the hotel that was created and constructed and set into the cliffs and in which most of the film scenes were shot. There is also ample coverage of Mgarr ix-Xini Bay, included the secluded restaurant which was also part of the set.
In an interview with Vogue, a smiling Angelina Jolie confirmed that “By the Sea” was in fact her honeymoon with Brad Pitt after their summer marriage last year.
Both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt returned to the US after filming and expressed their great satisfaction of their experiences in the Maltese islands, particularly the facilities, the skills of the Maltese employees involved and also that the film progressed as per their pre-planned schedule.
Filming was spread over nine weeks and involved 150 Maltese personnel with all services being provided by the Maltese company Pellikola.
The film is scheduled to be shown in Maltese cinemas in December.
