As of Saturday more than half of the UK’s will face stricter measures against Covid-19.
Health Minister Matt Hancock said millions of people living in London, Essex, York and other areas will face tougher tier 2 Covid measures. This means residents will not be able to mix indoors, including in pubs and restaurants.
A decision has yet to be made on whether Greater Manchester will be included in the high-warning list. Top tier restrictions means that bars, gyms and cinemas among others would not be allowed to open. So far only Liverpool falls in this category.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said there was no choice but to implement more restrictions. He said he would continue to put pressure on the government for more financial aid as, in his words, winter would be very difficult.
