UPDATED (3): Agius brothers and Jamie Vella plead not guilty to charges brought against them – Degiorgio chooses not to reply

Adrian Agius, 42, and his brother Robert Agius, 37, both of whom work in the construction industry as well as Jamie Vella, 37, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. George Degiorgio, 58, has not yet replied to any questions.

Jamie Vella and George Degiorgio are being charged with the murder of Dr Chircop while Adrian Agius is being accused of complicity in the murder. Robert Agius and Jamie Vella are being accused of complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

At this stage, no request for bail has been made, however the Prosecution has asked for the assets of the accused to be frozen. The Court upheld this request.

The four men arrested in connection with the two murders appeared in front of Magistrate Axiaq. One of the accused, Jamie Vella, is positive for Covid-19.

The Supt of Public Health gave a special exemption for Vella to be arraigned inn Court in his condition. He is wearing protective clothing in order not to spread the virus.

Journalists will be following the proceedings from the balcony in Court room 22.

Present in Court there were the lawyers for the Caruana Galizia family, Jason Azzopardi and Therese Comodini Cachia. One of the lawyers for Degiorgio is Dr William Cuschieri. Also present were the lawyers for the Agius brothers and Jamie Vella, Dr Alfred Abela and Dr Renee Darmanin.

Seen entering the courtroom were Daphne Caruana Galizia’s husband, Peter, her son Matthew and her sister.

The Prosecution is led by Wayne Camilleri and Shaun Boni and the office of the Attorney General .
