Around 1,200 immigrants at the Ħal Far centre where there are the tents, have taken control of the centre following riots which broke out last night. The immigrants burnt the offices and guardroom and destroyed five cars belonging to AWAS workers, the agency which takes care of their needs. Female immigrants are trapped inside and those who work at the centre are not being allowed in.
Sources have told TVM that right now the workers are taking shelter at the centre for immigrant families and are waiting for an order from the Police in order to intervene. The same sources said that there are only two police officers at the scene.
A police spokesperson said that the protest began at 10pm last night. A number of district police officers and officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit were called to the scene and one of them was slightly injured.
