UPDATED: Melvin Theuma alleges there was another intermediary in the murder

The compilation of evidence resumed today in the murder case of Daphne Caruana Galizia against Yorgen Fenech.

Among others, Melvin Theuma, who was granted a pardon, testified that he had information that brothers Degiorgio were threatened with death if they reveal the involvement of former minister Chris Cardona in the case. He also implicated an unidentified person who, he said, was also an intermediary in the plot to murder Caruana Galizia.

During today’s hearing against Fenech, who is charged with being the mastermind behind the journalist’s murder, the Court was presented with transcriptions of excerpts from 128 audio files of conversations that Melvin Theuma had with the accused, which not all of them are clear.

A mention was made of former minister Chris Cardona, whose name was in a mobile found at sea following the police raid at the potato shed when brothers Degiorgio and Vince Muscat were arrested.

Inspector Keith Arnaud asked Melvin Theuma how he knew about him and Theuma answered that it was Fenech who told him. He stated that Fenech also told him that Cardona spoke frequently with Alfred Degiorgio and that the Degiorgio brothers were threatened by lawyer David Gatt that they will be killed if they reveal former minister Cardona’s role in the murder of Caruana Galizia.

The witness added that he was given this information from their brother, Mario Degiorgio. Theuma alleged that there was another intermediary whose name starts with the letter B, who delivered the money from Dr Cardona to Alfred Degiorgio. Asked by lawyer Jason Azzopardi if the person’s nickname was ‘il-Bigly’, Theuma said he doesn’t remember exactly. He said that Fenech had told him that Dr Cardona was to be admitted in hospital due to pills overdose because he was worried with Caruana Galizia’s murder.

The witness said that when he was at Fenech’s farmhouse at Ħaż-Żebbuġ, he saw former deputy commissioner Silvio Valletta who was investigating Mrs Caruana Galizia’s murder. Theuma added that he had asked Fenech if he mentioned him and the accused told him that Valletta only said that Melvin was not a new face. Fenech had told him that Opposition leader Adrian Delia had ate at his farmhouse in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Theuma testified.

Asked about references made in a conversation with Fenech on 350, which later on he specified that they were three hundred and fifty thousand euro, Theuma said it was Johann Cremona, an enterpreneur in the gaming sector, who had told him how brothers Degiorgio were paid to carry out Caruana Galizia’s murder.

The compilation before Magistrate Rachel Montebello resumed for the first time since the Courts suspended hearings in March due to Covid-19. Social distancing was respected during the hearing, while the audience included accused and victim’s relatives, among others.

Chris Cardona and Adrian Delia react

Meanwhile, Dr Cardona denied the allegations made against him in Court. While describing them as lies and a frame-up against him, built on what was allegedly said between a person and another, he also denied that he ever suffered an overdose and was admitted in hospital for the overdose.

Opposition and Nationalist Party Leader Adrian Delia denied that he ever met Yorgen Fenech after reports emerged that he was involved in the 17 Black company.
