UPDATE (2): This is how the new subway in front of Porte des Bombes will look
The Planning Authority has received an application to build a new subway instead of the current one outside of Porte des Bombes. The new subway is going to look completely different.
Minister Ian Borg said that in the Porte des Bombes area, there are four of the most frequently used bus stops in our country. He said the new subway will be accessible to all, with stairs and lifts to cross from one bus stop to the other without delay or any danger.
Architect Albert Spiteri stated that Infrastructure Malta is proposing improvement of existing facilities by developing a subway with a new concept and innovative design right underneath National Road.
“The aim of this subway, which will be 12 metres in width, is that we will be joining both the National Road level and the Independence Road level. Where exactly will the subway be? It will be exactly where we are standing and will cross from here to the other side; there will be a lift where we are, which joins this level with the subway level and the Independence Road level, and there will also be lifts on the other side,” architect Spiteri explained.
The subway will be 12 metres wide and will be lit by natural light, will include public toilets a cafe and a parking bay for bicycles. IM explained that there will be easier excess for the four bus stops through stairs and lifts.
This improvement will eliminate the challenges which currently exist to access the four bus stops, including the existing tunnel which has ramps with long, sharp inclines and blind corners where you cannot see what is ahead of you. The existing steps also pose a problem for people with a disability.
Mr Spiteri explained that the barrel-vaulted structure which offers shelter for passengers on the Independence Road stop will be protected and included in the project design. The sixties structure has architectural value as one of the first reinforced concrete structures in Malta.
