Victim of Iklin shooting had been found guilty of several cases of fraud

Vincent Xuereb, 55, who last week was injured in a shooting in Iklin, had been found guilty of several cases of fraud because of his gambling addiction.

Court sentences show that Xuereb, known as Ċensu l-Oranġjo was found guilty of defrauding a number of people.

Ryan Sultana, who works as a gardener, is being held per arrest after last week he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Xuereb.

The Prosecution said that the accused told them that he shot at Xuereb to defend himself, with reports saying that Sultana shot Xuereb after he had allegedly defrauded him of €7,000.

In Court, it was stated that the victim sustained serious injuries but the shots did not hit any of his vital organs. It was explained that the victim had suffered gunshot wounds to his hand, shoulder and face.

In 2018, Xuereb was placed under a probation order after he was found guilty of defrauding a number of people for the sum of €15,000 by using false cheques.  Last year he was sentenced to a two year suspended sentence after defrauding another man of €2,000, in a case which dates back to 2007.

Xuereb’s daughter said that her father had a very severe gambling problem and had ended up with huge debts.  She said that although he had worked his whole life, he had to sell three homes to pay off his debts and his life was threatened several times. Xuereb ended up a victim of usury and this affected his mental health.

Ten years ago, he was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years after he was found guilty of assaulting a Police officer and slightly injuring three others. This happened after he was involved in a fight in which he injured three other people.
